Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
Let us contemplate the essence of life as taught in the sastras: it is not just about receiving, but equally about giving. We are truly fortunate to possess wealth, knowledge, love, and respect. However, if we do not share these gifts, we risk losing them—much like water evaporates from a pond in the summer heat.
A mentality fixated on accumulating more—more money, more possessions—can lead to disastrous consequences. We must strive not only to take but also to give. By doing so, we open the floodgates to true happiness. When Krishna blesses us with something, let us not raise our standard of living; instead, let us raise our standard of giving.
In his beautiful purport to Bhagavad Gita verses 13.8-12, Srila Prabhupada explains the word “ahimsa” as:
“Nonviolence is generally taken to mean not killing or destroying the body, but actually nonviolence means not to put others into distress. People in general are trapped by ignorance in the material concept of life, and they perpetually suffer material pains. So unless one elevates people to spiritual knowledge, one is practicing violence. One should try his best to distribute real knowledge to the people, so that they may become enlightened and leave this material entanglement. That is nonviolence.”
Thus, ahimsa or non-violence is about sharing Krishna with others—this is the greatest act of charity. Failing to share the priceless gift of Krishna bhakti, which we have received from Srila Prabhupada and our Guru-parampara, will lead us to stagnation, bitterness, and lifelessness. Conversely, by receiving and giving back, we become vibrant, healthy, and life-giving.
As we approach the auspicious month of Karthik this Thursday, let us remember the teachings of Lord Krishna, our acharyas, and Srila Prabhupada. May we practice bhakti sincerely and, as a gesture of gratitude, make a genuine effort to share this precious gift of Krishna bhakti with others as well.
Your servant,
Satya Sara das
