Hare Krishna Prabhus and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
I would like to share a beautiful verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam that teaches an important lesson in leadership: the mutual dependence between a leader and their followers is essential for achieving a shared vision within any team.
ātmānaṁ prakṛtiṣv addhā
nidhāya śreya āpnuyāt
rājñā tathā prakṛtayo
naradevāhitādhayaḥ
“O King, O lord of humanity, when a king directly depends upon his associates and follows their instructions, he is happy. Similarly, when his associates offer their gifts and activities to the king and follow his orders, they are also happy.” (SB 6.14.18)
This verse was spoken by Angira Muni when he met Citraketu Maharaj, teaching the principle of mutual dependence and happiness in leadership. Srila Prabhupada, in his purport to this verse, states: “The actual happiness of a king and his dependents is described in this verse. A king should not simply give orders because he is supreme; he must also follow their instructions. Similarly, the dependents should depend on the king. This mutual dependence will make everyone happy.”
There is a saying: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” As conditioned living entities, we often have an innate tendency to dominate others, especially when in influential positions. Those we wish to lead may also share this tendency, even if they lack power or position, which can create conflict and distort relationships.
Thus, first and foremost, leaders should depend on Guru, Sadhu, and Sastra for guidance. This foundational support is essential for their own growth and decision-making. At the same time, it is crucial for leaders to provide their subordinates and associates with the opportunity to express their viewpoints and be included in decision-making.
This dual approach fosters a sense of belonging among team members and significantly enhances the successful execution of any mission. By following internal guidance together with inclusive practices, leaders can create an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to contribute to the mission.
Your servant,
Satya Sara das
